How it started
The first version ran one building. Rent went into a spreadsheet, receipts into a drawer, and the state of the boiler lived in somebody's head. What was missing was never a report — it was the ordinary record: who paid, what was agreed, what was promised on the phone last Tuesday. We built that first, and everything since has been added the same way: because somebody running a building needed it on a particular day.
What we build for
We build for the ordinary day: the rent that arrived, the tap that is still dripping, the tenant moving in on Saturday, the inspection somebody has to write down. Everything is in one place, in your language, on the phone in your pocket.
Landlords, the people who rent from them, and the firms who fix things all work in the same records rather than emailing each other about them. A tenant portal costs nothing, because a building runs better when the people in it can see what was recorded about them.
What we will not do with your money
One thing we are deliberate about: we record money, we do not move it. Rent, fees and deposits are settled between you and your tenants, however you already do it. BuildingHQ writes down what was agreed and what arrived — it never holds your money or takes a cut of it.
The only payment we take is the subscription for the software itself. We are not a payment processor, we are not an escrow, and we do not sit between a tenant and a landlord. That is a deliberate limit, not a feature we have not got to yet.
